K–10Mathematics K–10 Syllabus
Mathematics for K−2
The new syllabus must now be taught in Kindergarten to Year 2 in all NSW primary schools.
Mathematics for 3−10
The new syllabus is to be taught in Years 3 to 10 from 2024.
2024 – Start teaching the new syllabus
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts.
Content
Stage 5
- MAO-WM-01
develops understanding and fluency in mathematics through exploring and connecting mathematical concepts, choosing and applying mathematical techniques to solve problems, and communicating their thinking and reasoning coherently and clearly
- MA5-GEO-P-02
constructs proofs involving congruent triangles and similar triangles and proves properties of plane shapes (Path: Ext)
Stn (Standard), Adv (Advanced) and Ext (Extension) have been used to suggest paths for related Stage 6 courses.
Construct formal proofs of the congruence of triangles, preserving the matching order of vertices and drawing relevant conclusions
Construct formal proofs of the similarity of triangles, preserving the matching order of vertices and drawing relevant conclusions
Recognise that a definition is the minimum amount of information needed to identify a particular figure
Prove the properties of isosceles and equilateral triangles and special quadrilaterals from the formal definition of the shapes
Prove and apply theorems and properties related to triangles and quadrilaterals
Prove and apply tests for quadrilaterals
Solve numerical and non-numerical problems in Euclidean geometry based on known assumptions and proven theorems
