K–10Mathematics K–10 Syllabus
Mathematics for K−2
The new syllabus must now be taught in Kindergarten to Year 2 in all NSW primary schools.
Mathematics for 3−10
The new syllabus is to be taught in Years 3 to 10 from 2024.
2024 – Start teaching the new syllabus
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts.
Content
Stage 5
- MAO-WM-01
develops understanding and fluency in mathematics through exploring and connecting mathematical concepts, choosing and applying mathematical techniques to solve problems, and communicating their thinking and reasoning coherently and clearly
- MA5-RAT-P-02
analyses and constructs graphs relating to rates of change (Path: Stn, Adv)
Stn (Standard), Adv (Advanced) and Ext (Extension) have been used to suggest paths for related Stage 6 courses.
Describe direct variation graphs as increasing at a constant rate and interpret the gradient of the line as the rate of change
Interpret and analyse further graphs that exhibit a constant rate of change, including those that are decreasing at a constant rate
Interpret distance–time graphs when the speed is variable, describing the rate of increase or decrease, the initial and final points, constant relationships represented by straight lines and variable relationships represented by curved lines
Describe the rate of change between variables in a variety of contexts including direct and inverse variation
Describe qualitatively the rate of change of a graph, using terms such as increasing at a decreasing rate
Represent a given description of a variable rate of change of one quantity over time
