Mathematics for K−2
The new syllabus must now be taught in Kindergarten to Year 2 in all NSW primary schools.
Mathematics for 3−10
The new syllabus is to be taught in Years 3 to 10 from 2024.
2024 – Start teaching the new syllabus
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts.

Life Skills
- MAO-WM-01
develops understanding and fluency in mathematics through exploring and connecting mathematical concepts, choosing and applying mathematical techniques to solve problems, and communicating their thinking and reasoning coherently and clearly
- MALS-ADS-01
uses strategies for addition and subtraction
Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.
Apply the language of addition and subtraction in everyday contexts
Recognise and use the symbols +, − and =
Model addition to solve problems
Apply basic facts of addition, sums with 2 single digits, and their corresponding subtraction fact
Add 2 numbers
Estimate and check the sum of 2 numbers
Calculate missing numbers in a number sentence
Select and apply appropriate strategies for addition to solve problems in a range of contexts
Model subtraction to solve problems
Subtract a number from another given number
Estimate and check for subtraction
Calculate missing numbers in a number sentence
