Mathematics for K−2
The new syllabus must now be taught in Kindergarten to Year 2 in all NSW primary schools.
Mathematics for 3−10
The new syllabus is to be taught in Years 3 to 10 from 2024.
2024 – Start teaching the new syllabus
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts.
Content
Life Skills
- MAO-WM-01
develops understanding and fluency in mathematics through exploring and connecting mathematical concepts, choosing and applying mathematical techniques to solve problems, and communicating their thinking and reasoning coherently and clearly
- MALS-POS-01
demonstrates knowledge of position and direction in everyday contexts
Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.
Locate the position of familiar objects
Respond to positional language to follow an instruction
Describe the position of 2 objects in relation to each other
Describe the position of themselves in relation to their environment
Recognise that objects and features are represented on a map or a plan
Locate familiar places on maps
Recognise different cultural representations of maps
Recognise the language of direction in everyday contexts
Respond to directional language to follow an instruction
Provide directions to get from one location to another
Use a map to follow directions between locations
Use a map to approximate a location of a place in relation to another
Locate current location on a map
