Life Skills

Life Skills for Stage 4/5

Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.

Living systems

Working scientifically

In this focus area, students develop skills in asking questions or making predictions, interpreting data and information, and communicating scientific information. Additional Working scientifically outcomes and skills may be integrated with this content.

Body systems
  • Recognise parts of the human body

  • Indicate parts of the human body in everyday contexts

  • Describe the function of basic structures of the human body

  • Identify parts of the human body related to basic needs

  • Predict what will happen without the function of a body part

  • Recognise scientific terms for major organs in the human body

  • Describe how humans can look after their bodies to stay healthy

Plant systems
  • Recognise parts of a plant

  • Describe how parts of a plant help it survive

Ecosystems
  • Observe living and non-living things in the local area

  • Identify that living things grow and change; use food, water and air; respond to changes; and reproduce

  • Use data and information to group things according to whether they are living or non-living

  • Identify a variety of plants and animals in the local environment

  • Compare the needs of plants and animals for survival

  • Identify the roles of plants as producers, animals as consumers, and fungi as decomposers, in an identified ecosystem

  • Interpret a food chain or food web to identify consumers and how they get energy

  • Predict what will happen to living things when their environment changes

  • Identify the different living and non-living things that work together as parts of an ecosystem

  • Represent food chains in a variety of ways

  • Demonstrate ways to care for pets or plants

  • Investigate an ecosystem in the local environment to identify the interdependency of living things

  • Communicate ideas about systems through written texts, using language appropriate to purpose and audience
