Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.

Disease

Working scientifically

In this focus area, students develop skills in interpreting data and information, and communicating scientific information. Additional Working scientifically outcomes and skills may be integrated with this content.

  • Identify some symptoms of diseases

  • Identify some infectious and non-infectious diseases

  • Recognise that some bacteria and viruses can cause infectious disease

Disease control and prevention
  • Identify features of the human body that protect it from disease

  • Outline ways to protect the body from disease, including vaccinations

  • Identify the importance of preventing the spread of disease

  • Interpret the message being communicated in a disease-related advertisement

  • Identify sources of reliable and locally available information about health-related issues

  • Identify personal hygiene practices that prevent the spread of disease

  • Outline ways food can be safely prepared and stored to prevent harmful bacteria growth
