Life Skills for Stage 4/5

Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.

Personal genetics and evolutionary change

Working scientifically

In this focus area, students develop skills in using scientific tools and instruments safely, recording data and information, and communicating scientific information. Additional Working scientifically outcomes and skills may be integrated with this content.

Genetic traits
  • Identify physical traits humans have that describe their appearance

  • Identify acquired traits that humans gain through experience

  • Observe the features of animals and new plants to identify similar features to their parents

Evolutionary change
  • Identify that plants and animals had different features in the distant past

  • Identify features of plants and animals that help them survive

  • Identify changes within a species that occur as a result of their environment

  • Engage with fossil evidence of plants and animals that lived in the past

Personal genetics and evolutionary change in context
  • Observe and record, with consent, the eye or hair colour of familiar people

  • Measure and record the height of familiar people, or other living things, using appropriate tools

  • Recount how you learnt to do something
