Life Skills

Life Skills for Stage 4/5

Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.

Working scientifically

In this focus area, students develop skills in making observations, using scientific tools and instruments safely, and planning and conducting scientific investigations. Additional Working scientifically outcomes and skills may be integrated with this content.

Energy transfer
  • Experience energy through the senses

  • Participate in planning and conducting a safe investigation to determine the effect of heat energy on a solid and liquid

  • Recognise the role of energy in melting, boiling and evaporation

  • Recognise how heat energy moves through a solid, liquid or gas by conduction, convection or radiation

  • Participate in an investigation to show that a metal heats up more quickly than a non-metal

  • Use knowledge of energy transfer to identify ways to be safe during a fire

Chemical change
  • Observe chemical changes that occur in everyday life

  • Participate in planning and conducting an experiment to observe a chemical change using the senses and/or tools

  • Identify signs of a chemical change

Geological change
  • Observe natural and human-made features of the local area

  • Participate in planning an investigation to determine how natural features of the local area are used

  • Describe how landforms have changed due to natural processes

  • Participate in investigations to observe the effects of droughts and floods on the local landscape

  • Engage with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Cultural accounts of earthquakes and volcanoes

Change in context
  • Identify changes that occur in everyday life

  • Describe some ways to observe change

  • Sequence events to show change over time

  • Participate in a secondary investigation to investigate change in the local area, using digital technology and acknowledging information sources
