Life Skills for Stage 4/5

Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.

Energy

Working scientifically

In this focus area, students develop skills in using scientific tools and instruments safely, conducting scientific investigations, and recording data and information. Additional Working scientifically outcomes and skills may be integrated with this content.

Sources of energy
  • Identify energy sources in everyday life

  • Observe a combustion reaction and identify the source of energy

  • Identify the use of fossil fuels as sources for household energy, such as crude oil, natural gas and coal

  • Identify that energy sources are limited

  • Outline the reasons why there is a need to reduce energy usage

  • Investigate alternative energy sources

Electrical energy
  • Identify personal uses of electrical energy

  • Recognise that electrical appliances use electricity from power points or batteries

  • Describe and demonstrate how to use electrical appliances and equipment safely

  • Identify energy transformations in everyday life

  • Identify examples of wasted energy

  • Construct a simple electrical circuit

  • Participate in an investigation that uses scientific instruments to measure and record readings of voltage and current in an electrical circuit

  • Participate in an investigation to select an appliance based on price and energy efficiency

  • Participate in an investigation to record the rate of energy usage (kW) of individual appliances around the home or school

  • Explore ways to reduce personal energy usage

  • Investigate new technologies to reduce energy consumption in everyday life
