7–10Child Studies 7–10 Syllabus
The new Child Studies 7–10 Syllabus (2025) is to be implemented from 2028 and will replace the Child Studies 7–10 Syllabus (2019).
2026 and 2027 – Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2028 – Start teaching new syllabus
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts. Schools may choose to implement the new syllabus during the planning and preparation phase.
Content
Life Skills
Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.
Recognise different ways children play
Identify the purpose of play for children
Identify ways to promote inclusion in play activities for children
Explore how children learn and develop through play
Participate in planning play activities appropriate for a stage of development
Recognise ways to include all children to participate in play
Identify the benefits for children of learning through play in different settings
Describe ways Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children learn on-Country
Recognise how cultural play activities contribute to a child’s development
Plan play activities that enhance cultural learning
Identify safety and/or risk factors associated with play choices and environments
Explore activities that contribute to the development of cultural identity for children from a diverse range of backgrounds, including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children
Recognise types of formal and/or informal education for children
Recognise community resources or services that provide educational experiences for children
Identify social or cultural learning opportunities to enhance a child’s education
Identify how diverse cultural experiences can support a child’s education
Identify how formal education supports children’s safety, including through road and water safety programs
Identify factors that may affect children’s access to education
Recognise the role of schools and educational settings
Recognise rules and laws that protect children
Identify reasons schools or educational settings are required to follow legislation related to children
Explore the importance of Cultural Practices for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children
Recognise challenges children might face in schools
Identify the diverse learning needs of children
Identify factors that contribute to inclusive learning environments
Explore ways schools or services provide support for children with diverse learning needs
Locate reliable information on supporting children’s play and learning
