7–10Child Studies 7–10 Syllabus
The new Child Studies 7–10 Syllabus (2025) is to be implemented from 2028 and will replace the Child Studies 7–10 Syllabus (2019).
2026 and 2027 – Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2028 – Start teaching new syllabus
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts. Schools may choose to implement the new syllabus during the planning and preparation phase.

Stage 5
Outline the stages of development through each trimester of pregnancy
Analyse the effect of lifestyle factors on fetal development during pregnancy, including nutrition, physical activity, drug and alcohol use and stress
Describe medical conditions associated with pregnancy that can affect fetal development
Outline options for support and care during pregnancy and birth, including birthing on-Country
Recognise the Cultural significance of birthing on-Country for Aboriginal women
Describe delivery options for childbirth and the complications that can be associated with the birthing process
Describe physical characteristics of newborns
Identify the care requirements of a newborn, including hygiene, sleeping, settling and feeding
Explain safety requirements for newborn sleep
Describe hygiene routines required for the safe care of a newborn
Describe how cultural beliefs and practices can influence feeding practices for newborns
Describe and examine data on common health conditions that affect newborns
Analyse reasons why some newborns may need special care
Evaluate formal and informal supports available for the care of newborns
Outline the financial preparations necessary when expecting a baby
Evaluate equipment and resources that assist in the care and safety of a newborn
Identify the rights and basic needs of children
Analyse socioeconomic, sociocultural, environmental and genetic factors that affect child growth and development
Investigate benefits and leave entitlements for new parents
Discuss the concept of childhood
Analyse the changing nature of childhood over time
Outline the stages of development and milestones of newborns and children, including physical, social, emotional, cognitive and language milestones
Discuss the importance of children having meaningful participation in decisions about their growth and development
Assess the range of support services and resources available to support the growth and development of children with disability
Evaluate the accessibility and reliability of information and services that support childhood growth and development
Research government and non-government agencies that advocate for the rights and care of children
Create written texts to explain and evaluate how types of support and resources can meet the needs of children as they develop
Use subject-specific terminology to communicate concepts of childhood growth and development
