7–10Child Studies 7–10 Syllabus (2025)
The new Child Studies 7–10 Syllabus (2025) is to be implemented from 2028 and will replace the Child Studies 7–10 Syllabus (2019).
2026 and 2027 – Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2028 – Start teaching the new syllabus
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts. Schools may choose to implement the new syllabus during the planning and preparation phase.
Content
Stage 5
Compare the terms ‘play’, ‘learning’ and ‘education’
Compare types of play, including solitary, parallel, cooperative, social and risky play
Describe the terms ‘child-led play’ and ‘adult-led play’
Describe how children learn and develop through play
Investigate how play promotes a child’s wellbeing
Propose strategies to enhance inclusion for all children in play
Describe the value of learning through play in a variety of indoor, outdoor and natural settings
Analyse the benefits of providing opportunities for supervised risky play
Outline how Cultural play activities contribute to Cultural identity for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children and how they can learn on-Country
Analyse how play activities contribute to development and cultural identity for children from a diverse range of backgrounds
Outline different types of formal education for children
Evaluate community resources and services that provide informal educational experiences
Identify cultural learning opportunities to enhance education
Describe the role of diverse cultural experiences in a child’s education
Analyse how formal education, including through road safety programs, water safety programs and other educational programs, supports the safety of children
Outline equity issues in education and propose strategies that address them
Identify legislation for children, staff and institutions in educational settings
Explain the role of legislation in protecting students in educational settings
Discuss social issues for children in formal education
Explain the important role schools play in supporting the mental health and wellbeing of children
Explore the importance of Cultural Practices of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Knowledges in educational settings
Discuss the diverse range of learning needs
Investigate strategies to create inclusive learning environments
Examine ways schools and other services provide support for children with diverse learning needs
Evaluate the accessibility and reliability of information and services that support childhood education and learning
Research the importance of play and learning in providing children with a strong foundation for development
Create written texts to explain the role of play and learning in childhood development
Use subject-specific terminology to communicate concepts of childhood play and learning
