Life Skills

Life Skills for Stage 4/5

Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.

Growth, development and care
Fetal development and birth
  • Recognise the stages of development in each trimester of pregnancy

  • Recognise how lifestyle factors affect fetal development during pregnancy

  • Identify potential conditions associated with pregnancy

  • Identify delivery options for childbirth

  • Identify complications associated with the birthing process

  • Recognise support and care options for pregnancy and birth

  • Recognise cultural practices and beliefs about pregnancy, birthing or postnatal care

  • Explore organisations or resources available for support during pregnancy or after birth

Newborn care
  • Recognise the physical characteristics of a newborn

  • Recognise the care needs of a newborn

  • Recognise the safety requirements for a newborn’s sleep environment

  • Identify hygiene routines required for the safe care of a newborn

  • Explore cultural practices that influence care practices for newborns

  • Identify common health conditions that may affect newborns

  • Identify reasons why newborns may require special care

  • Recognise formal or informal supports in the care of newborns

  • Identify financial preparations for having a baby

  • Identify safety equipment and/or resources that assist in the care of a newborn

  • Explore the use of safety equipment in the care of newborns

Supporting growth and development
