Rationale

The Child Studies 7–10 Syllabus develops students’ knowledge and understanding of the growth, development and care of children. Child Studies explores the social, environmental, genetic and cultural factors influencing development of children from birth to 12 years.

In Child Studies 7–10, students enhance their understanding of Cultural Knowledges, histories and Practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and Communities. By exploring these Cultural insights students gain a deeper appreciation and respect for the Cultural ways of growth, development and care in children.

Child Studies 7–10 assists students to understand the significant impact a child’s environment can have on their life, and the role that the child and others can take in creating a positive, inclusive and safe environment. The syllabus equips students to develop an understanding of the way children’s growth, development and care are supported at an individual, family and community level. Students have the opportunity to reflect and think critically about the influence of cultural contexts, developing their capacity to respond to the needs of all children. They examine how families, languages and traditions contribute to children’s development and care, developing respect for cultural identity and heritage.

Students learn that the health and wellbeing of children can be supported and promoted by meeting the specific needs of children and studying the factors that contribute to health and wellbeing at different stages of development. Students evaluate information and services to gain insight into the stages of child development and the importance of play for learning. In addition, the syllabus equips students to understand the strategies, practices, legislation and policies that can help keep children safe.

By studying Child Studies 7–10, students develop the knowledge, understanding and skills which form a foundation for a wide range of study options in and beyond school, including a variety of vocational pathways that support and enhance the wellbeing of children.
