K–10Classical Languages K–10 Syllabus
The new Classical Languages K–10 Syllabus (2022) is to be taught from 2024.
2023 Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus. Schools have the option to start teaching the new syllabus where there is not an existing course for a language.
2024 Start teaching new syllabus for:
- Schools with a K–6 language program
- Mandatory 100 hours of a Language in Years 7–10
Students who commenced a 100-hour or 200-hour elective course in 2023 may continue to study that course in 2024.

Stage 5
- CL5-UND-01
analyses and responds to information to demonstrate understanding of a range of moderately complex texts
- CL5-UND-02
translates a range of moderately complex texts into English
Interpret information, purpose and perspective in a range of synthetic and/or original texts, seen and unseen
Recognise different layers of meaning
Identify cohesive devices to track meaning across different parts of a moderately complex text
Select appropriate resources to support the comprehension and interpretation of texts
Respond to a range of texts critically and creatively in the target language or in English
Use knowledge of a range of grammar structures in simple, compound and complex sentences
Use knowledge of a wide range of vocabulary
Use knowledge of culture, and linguistic, literary and text features
Use a range of metalanguage to describe grammatical, literary and text features
Use pronunciation, intonation and phrasing to demonstrate understanding of the text's meaning and purpose
Use knowledge of a range of sound–symbol correspondences and features of the target language writing system
Produce coherent and comprehensible English translations of a range of synthetic and/or original texts
Produce translations that retain the emphasis, tone and register of the original text and reflect the author's purpose
Compare different translations of the same text to identify features of successful translations
