Stage 1

Understanding texts
Understanding and responding to target language texts
  • Recognise modelled vocabulary and phrases in simple texts

  • Associate vocabulary with known actions, people, places, objects and ideas

  • Use teacher cues and visual stimuli to support comprehension

  • Respond to simple questions such as who, what, where, when in the target language or in English

Applying knowledge of language systems to understand and respond to target language texts
  • Recognise that words can exist in different forms

  • Use knowledge of modelled vocabulary and phrases

  • Recognise and reproduce the sounds and intonation patterns of modelled vocabulary and phrases

  • Recognise sound–symbol correspondences and reproduce symbols and modelled vocabulary in the target language writing system
