K–10Auslan K–10 Syllabus
The new Auslan K–10 Syllabus (2023) is to be implemented from 2026.
2024 and 2025 – Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2024 and 2025 – Option to start teaching
2026 – Start teaching new syllabus for schools that choose to offer Auslan:
- within a K–6 language program
- for the mandatory 100 hours of language study in Years 7–10
- as Stage 5 language elective
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts.
Content
Stage 3
- AU3-CRE-01
creates informative and imaginative texts for different audiences using a range of familiar language
Content is provided for:
- Additional: students learning Auslan as an additional language
- Prior learning/experience: students learning Auslan with knowledge and/or experience from in or outside the classroom
- First: students learning Auslan as their first language.
Communicate about daily lives, social activities and school subjects
Recognise and use the 3 types of depicting signs
Recognise the role of non-manual features in clauses
Identify how signers establish spatial locations with depicting signs
Identify how signers show constructed action
Identify how verbs are modified to add additional meaning
Identify characteristic features of narratives and simple informative texts
Communicate about their personal world
Recognise and use the 3 types of depicting signs
Identify verb types based on their integration of space
Use features of Auslan to connect clauses equally, unequally or through composite clause structure
Identify complex language and structural features that contribute to cohesion in a range of texts
Use resources to identify words and phrases which might not have a direct sign equivalent
Create informative and imaginative texts
Create bilingual texts for the classroom or school community
Create informative and persuasive texts that include diverse perspectives
Reinterpret informative and imaginative texts
Create bilingual texts for the school community
