K–10Auslan K–10 Syllabus
The new Auslan K–10 Syllabus (2023) is to be implemented from 2026.
2024 and 2025 – Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2024 and 2025 – Option to start teaching
2026 – Start teaching new syllabus for schools that choose to offer Auslan:
- within a K–6 language program
- for the mandatory 100 hours of language study in Years 7–10
- as Stage 5 language elective
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts.
Content
Life Skills
- AULS-INT-01
uses Auslan to interact with others in everyday contexts
Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.
Content is provided for:
- Additional: students learning Auslan as an additional language
- Prior learning/experience: students learning Auslan with knowledge and/or experience from in or outside the classroom
- First: students learning Auslan as their first language.
Engage in simple interactions which use Auslan
Interact with others in familiar contexts which use Auslan
Use gestures, approximate versions of familiar signs and/or high-frequency signs
Participate in turn-taking during collaborative learning activities
Engage with peers at school and members of the wider community
Express preferences, likes and dislikes in Auslan
Observe activities that involve interactions, negotiations and management of opinions and social/cultural behaviours
Engage in simple interactions which use Auslan
Express preferences, likes and dislikes to a communication partner through sign and gestures
Engage with others in Auslan at school and community events
Discuss issues affecting the Deaf community
Respond to gestural or visually expressive features of communication
Reproduce high-frequency signs using approximate handshapes, location and movement
Represent common letters through fingerspelling
Identify and use features of the Auslan grammatical system
Acknowledge that the characteristics of signs and various types of non-manual features affect meaning
Engage in the elements of a sign
Observe linguistic structures in formal and informal interactions with peers and the wider community
Reproduce non-manual features of Auslan
Gain attention from a teacher or peers using gestures, tapping, touching and/or high-frequency signs
Engage in culturally appropriate forms of communication within a range of settings and audiences
Explore protocols of intercultural interactions between the Deaf and hearing communities
