K–10Auslan K–10 Syllabus
The new Auslan K–10 Syllabus (2023) is to be implemented from 2026.
2024 and 2025 – Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2024 and 2025 – Option to start teaching
2026 – Start teaching new syllabus for schools that choose to offer Auslan:
- within a K–6 language program
- for the mandatory 100 hours of language study in Years 7–10
- as Stage 5 language elective
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts.
Content
Life Skills
- AULS-RLC-01
explores their own and other languages, cultures and identity
Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.
Content is provided for:
- Additional: students learning Auslan as an additional language
- Prior learning/experience: students learning Auslan with knowledge and/or experience from in or outside the classroom
- First: students learning Auslan as their first language.
Identify elements of identity
Observe that people around them have different communication needs
Explore identity through language and culture
Describe their identity within the hearing and Deaf communities
Explore identity groups within the Deaf community
Show awareness of others using Auslan
Explore language use in the community
Explore how the Deaf community lives and how it is different to how hearing people live
Acknowledge that Auslan is the language of the Deaf community in Australia
Discuss who uses Auslan in the community
Explore the use of sign languages around the world
Identify strategies used between Deaf and hearing people to communicate
Acknowledge a range of signed and spoken national and international languages
Identify others using Auslan
Observe elements of linguistic and cultural systems
Explore how Auslan and Deaf culture are interrelated
Identify cultural influences on communication strategies used in Auslan
Explore factors that contribute to cultural attitudes and awareness of deaf communities
Identify events, initiatives and/or policies that impact the use of sign language in the community
Explore how new words, signs and expressions are developed
Identify similarities and differences when communicating with deaf and hearing communities
