K–10Auslan K–10 Syllabus
The new Auslan K–10 Syllabus (2023) is to be implemented from 2026.
2024 and 2025 – Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2024 and 2025 – Option to start teaching
2026 – Start teaching new syllabus for schools that choose to offer Auslan:
- within a K–6 language program
- for the mandatory 100 hours of language study in Years 7–10
- as Stage 5 language elective
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts.
Content
Life Skills
- AULS-UND-01
accesses and responds to information and ideas in a range of texts in Auslan and/or English
Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.
Content is provided for:
- Additional: students learning Auslan as an additional language
- Prior learning/experience: students learning Auslan with knowledge and/or experience from in or outside the classroom
- First: students learning Auslan as their first language.
Understand short, familiar words that are fingerspelled
Engage with simple texts
Express likes or dislikes in response to elements of texts
Understand words that are fingerspelled
Access information from texts
Engage with a range of texts
View a variety of texts
Understand short messages conveyed using Auslan and/or fingerspelling
Express likes or dislikes in response to texts
Access informative and imaginative information within texts
Respond in Auslan using body language, gestures, touch, visual expressions and/or words
Produce an approximate version of a familiar sign that is modelled in a signed text
Engage in modelled translation of objects labelled in Auslan and English
Recognise that an object can have at least 2 different names, one in each language
Respond to questions about informative texts
Respond to creative or imaginative texts
Express likes or dislikes in response to imaginative texts
Explore differences in words in Auslan and English
Engage in the translation of words between Auslan and English
Respond to a range of texts in formal and informal contexts
Respond to information in texts
