K–10Auslan K–10 Syllabus (2023)
The new Auslan K–10 Syllabus (2023) is to be implemented from 2026.
2025 – Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2025 – Option to start teaching
2026 – Start teaching the new syllabus for schools that choose to offer Auslan:
- within a K–6 language program
- for the mandatory 100 hours of language study in Years 7–10
- as Stage 5 language elective
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts. Schools may choose to implement the new syllabus during the planning and preparation phase.
Content
Early Stage 1

exchanges meaning using key signs and common protocols
Content is provided for:
- Additional: students learning Auslan as an additional language
- Prior learning/experience: students learning Auslan with knowledge and/or experience from in or outside the classroom
- First: students learning Auslan as their Loading .
Greet peers and teachers and exchange simple information about self and family in guided interactions using Loading and key Loading
Communicate in routine exchanges or play-based activities using key signs
Engage in activities using Loading and facial expressions for unknown signs
Exchange information about self, family and friends in classroom interactions
Communicate in routine exchanges or play-based activities
Recognise the main formational elements of Loading , movement and location in signs
Observe how changes in handshape, movement and location change the meaning of signs
Reproduce key signs using correct location and handshape in interactions
Use the main formational elements of handshape, movement and location in signs
Recognise that signs can be organised by handshape in dictionaries, which can be used if the English word for a sign is not known
Identify the handshape of individual signs and identify signs that are made with a handshape
Recognise that Loading represent several things by a particular handshape
Use simple handling and Loading
Follow common protocols in the classroom to gain attention
Communicate with peers and teachers using appropriate social protocols and attention-gaining strategies
