K–10Auslan K–10 Syllabus
The new Auslan K–10 Syllabus (2023) is to be implemented from 2026.
2024 and 2025 – Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2024 and 2025 – Option to start teaching
2026 – Start teaching new syllabus for schools that choose to offer Auslan:
- within a K–6 language program
- for the mandatory 100 hours of language study in Years 7–10
- as Stage 5 language elective
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts.
Content
Stage 1
- AU1-INT-01
exchanges meaning in guided interactions using high-frequency signs and common protocols
Content is provided for:
- Additional: students learning Auslan as an additional language
- Prior learning/experience: students learning Auslan with knowledge and/or experience from in or outside the classroom
- First: students learning Auslan as their first language.
Interact with peers and teachers in everyday situations using high-frequency signs
Use high-frequency signs, handshapes, non-manual features and gestures in interactions with peers and teachers
Interact using common social exchanges
Interact with peers and teachers about self, family, friends, routines and pastimes using a variety of signs
Interact appropriately to take turns, play games or classify items
Use standard signing space
Use plain verbs and unmodified indicating verbs
Use simple lexical adjectives to describe familiar objects, animals or people
Use simple handling and size and space specifier depicting signs
Explore and use a variety of non-manual features with high-frequency signs and common protocols
Recognise major types of path movements
Use handling and size and shape specifier depicting signs with increasing accuracy
Use entity depicting signs for simple movement and locations
Explore and use a variety of non-manual features with high-frequency signs and common protocols
Use appropriate non-manual features for questions and statements
Identify signs associated with the major types of path movements
Modify indicating verbs to show participants involved in events in single clauses and multiple clauses
Identify differences in conversation protocols between hearing people and d/Deaf people
Use common protocols in the classroom and videoconference platforms
Use common protocols in guided and free interactions to develop social and communicative skills
Use attentive receptive skills across a range of school contexts
Use basic videoconferencing skills when interacting online
