K–10Auslan K–10 Syllabus
The new Auslan K–10 Syllabus (2023) is to be implemented from 2026.
2024 and 2025 – Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2024 and 2025 – Option to start teaching
2026 – Start teaching new syllabus for schools that choose to offer Auslan:
- within a K–6 language program
- for the mandatory 100 hours of language study in Years 7–10
- as Stage 5 language elective
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts.
Content
Stage 1
- AU1-UND-01
identifies key information in simple texts and responds in a variety of ways
Content is provided for:
- Additional: students learning Auslan as an additional language
- Prior learning/experience: students learning Auslan with knowledge and/or experience from in or outside the classroom
- First: students learning Auslan as their first language.
Follow high-frequency signs and instructions
Identify key information in simple texts
View imaginative simple texts and recognise that their own experience can shape their ideas and opinions of texts
Follow extended instructions with multiple steps
Identify and respond to information in simple texts
View imaginative texts and understand that their own experience can shape their ideas and opinions of texts
Identify and sequence information to respond to key details in simple texts
Match key information in Auslan and English to respond to texts
Translate simple words and phrases used in everyday contexts between Auslan and English
Retell steps of a procedure using list buoys and sequencing language
Identify and share information from texts about the description of people, animals and objects using lexical signs and depicting signs
Use signs, English words or enact with constructed action to respond to a range of imaginative experiences
Translate signs, words and phrases between Auslan and English using visual cues, signs and English words
