Life Skills

Life Skills for Stage 4/5

Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.

Sports management
Risk and injury management
  • Identify risks in physical activity or sport

  • Identify strategies to reduce these risks

  • Recognise the purpose of rules, guidelines or policies for keeping people safe in sport

  • Recognise how a risk assessment can be used to identify and reduce risk in physical activity or sporting contexts

  • Explore the main features of a risk assessment

  • Identify people, sources of information or support networks to collaborate with when planning for safe participation

  • Identify how protective equipment and modifications can enhance safety in physical activity or sport

  • Identify injuries that could occur in a physical activity or sporting context

  • Explore the role of a sports trainer in ensuring safe participation in physical activity or sport

Coaching
  • Identify familiar experiences where a person has provided support for a task or activity

  • Communicate how a person providing support was beneficial in undertaking the task or activity

  • Identify the role and responsibilities of a coach

  • Explore how a coach can enhance safety in a movement context

  • Explore qualities and skills required to be an effective coach

  • Explore various coaching styles

  • Compare the advantages and disadvantages of different coaching styles

  • Investigate how a coach can influence personal attitudes, safety, participation or performance

  • Plan and implement elements of a coaching session for a physical activity or sport

  • Coach others to develop skills in a physical activity or sport

  • Demonstrate effective communication skills when providing feedback to a player or team

  • Explore coaching opportunities or qualifications

Officiating
  • Identify positions of authority in everyday contexts

  • Identify ways people with authority can be beneficial to groups and communities

  • Identify the qualities or skills required to be an effective official

  • Recognise how an official enhances player safety

  • Recognise skills required for refereeing or umpiring a sport

Event management
