Rationale

Physical Activity and Sports Science 7–10 equips students with the knowledge and skills for a broad range of physical activities including sport, leisure and recreational pursuits. In an increasingly complex, sedentary and rapidly changing world, it is crucial for young people to understand the importance of lifelong movement, explore emerging and diverse forms of physical activity, and learn how to enhance performance and involvement in physical activity and sport for themselves and others.

The Physical Activity and Sports Science 7–10 Syllabus broadens the knowledge and skills covered in the Personal Development, Health and Physical Education K–6 and 7–10 syllabuses. Students analyse movement performance and refine movement skills, concepts and strategies. Competent and confident performance in movement environments can enhance enjoyment and consequently increase the likelihood of students sustaining an active lifestyle.

The study of Physical Activity and Sports Science contributes to students’ knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal Peoples’ ways of Knowing, Being and Doing. Students learn about the Cultural significance of physical activity to the identities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and Communities.

Participation in physical activity and sport provides students with an opportunity to use movement as a medium for expression and communication, as a context for social interaction, collaboration, cooperation and teamwork, and as a source of problem-solving and personal challenge. It also offers students experiences related to leadership, enjoyment and satisfaction. Participation in particular physical activities can be culturally significant and plays an important role in the development of cultural understanding. Students explore how physical activity and sporting contexts provide challenges and opportunities to demonstrate resilience for a diverse range of people and cultures, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

Students examine areas of interest and relevant issues related to the physical, emotional, social, cultural or scientific dimensions of physical activity and sport. They learn valuable skills in organisation, enterprise, leadership and communication that are relevant for further education, career pathways, community participation and personal interests.
