Life Skills

Life Skills for Stage 4/5

Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.

Science of movement
Nutrition and hydration
  • Recognise the relationship between food and energy

  • Identify sources of energy in food

  • Recognise the difference between energy input and energy output

  • Identify the importance of nutrition for participation in physical activity or sport

  • Identify types of food that best support participation in a selected physical activity or sport

  • Explore how nutrition needs differ across different physical activities or sports

  • Identify reasons people get thirsty during and after physical activity or sport

  • Identify factors that can contribute to fluid loss during physical activity or sport

  • Explore the impact of dehydration on participating in physical activity or sport

  • Identify ways to maintain hydration

  • Demonstrate understanding of opportunities to hydrate when participating in a range of sports

  • Participate in a range of physical activities or sports and discuss the factors that would influence the nutritional and hydration requirements for athletes

Body systems
  • Identify the muscle groups used when participating in physical activity or sport

  • Explore the function of muscles when participating in physical activity or sport

  • Identify the main bones that assist in physical activity or sport

  • Explore the role of the skeletal system when participating in physical activity or sport

  • Identify types of joints and joint movements in physical activity or sport

  • Identify body systems

  • Identify the main features of the circulatory system

  • Explore the role of the circulatory system when participating in physical activity or sport

  • Identify the main structures of the respiratory system

  • Participate in physical activities of varying intensity and duration, and monitor the changes experienced by the body, including heart rate, recovery rate and ventilation rate

Aerobic and anaerobic exercise
  • Participate in different types of aerobic and anaerobic activities

  • Identify how the body responds during aerobic or anaerobic activities
