The new Visual and Motion Design 7–10 Syllabus (2025) is to be implemented from 2028 and will replace the Visual Design 7–10 Syllabus (2004).
2026 and 2027 – Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2028 – Start teaching the new syllabus
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts. Schools may choose to implement the new syllabus during the planning and preparation phase.

analyses and interprets design artworks using the Artworld concepts and their relationships in Critical and historical studies
Investigate and interpret the roles and work of designers in different times, places and contexts
Interpret how and why designers’ choices inform their representation of ideas and communicate intentions in their design artworks
Respond to the significance and contribution of designers in different cultures and contexts, including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander designers
Investigate and explain how and why design artworks are intentionally made for a specific purpose, audience and user needs
Identify key styles, movements, forms, contexts and times related to design artworks
Analyse different design artworks and consider how form and function constructs meaning
Respond to representations of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Cultural Expressions, identity and connections to Country and/or Place in design artworks
Interpret how the world is a source of inspiration, ideas and interests for designers
Explain and justify how and why designers use purposeful design decisions to reflect and respond to world events, local and global trends, and contexts across different times and places
Investigate how environmental, technological and economic change in the world, shapes design challenges, processes and outcomes across physical, digital and interactive contexts
Investigate the role and function of the audience as consumers, participants, collaborators, clients and end users in different contexts
Explain how audiences adopt different points of view when experiencing, using and interacting with design artworks, and how they respond based on personal, cultural or contextual factors
Examine how user behaviour, expectations and feedback influence the design process, decision-making and audience reception
