The new Visual and Motion Design 7–10 Syllabus (2025) is to be implemented from 2028 and will replace the Visual Design 7–10 Syllabus (2004).
2026 and 2027 – Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2028 – Start teaching the new syllabus
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts. Schools may choose to implement the new syllabus during the planning and preparation phase.

selects and applies aspects of Design practice to represent and communicate points of view in a body of work
Content in Design practice includes reference to visual design and motion design forms. Teachers select from graphic and typographic design, 3D design and the built environment, animation and kinetic design or emerging design forms.
LoadingInvestigate and justify how intentions, choices and actions can represent ideas about the world when using different viewpoints
Document design cycle and workflow, including research, concept development, prototyping, production, timelines and refinement in a Design diary
Investigate, invent, adapt and apply a range of strategies when selecting design materials, techniques and processes to represent different viewpoints and refine a body of work
Investigate sustainable design practices with a focus on material choices and waste reduction, recycling and upcycling and apply this understanding to create responsible design solution
Experiment with visual storytelling strategies, including framing, juxtaposition, pacing, emphasis, rhythm, anticipation and transitions to shape how audiences respond to design artworks
Explore and experiment with design software applications and related techniques
Select graphic and typographic design, 3D design and the built environment, animation and kinetic design or emerging design forms to represent ideas and intentions in a body of work
Develop, refine and demonstrate technical accomplishment in a body of work individually or collaboratively
Demonstrate curatorial judgement to customise, select, arrange and present design artworks as a body of work to engage an audience
Create written texts to develop and reflect on design ideas, find design solutions and communicate intentions, choices and actions in own design practice
Use subject-specific language to communicate and represent ideas about own design making practice informed by the Artworld concepts and Viewpoints
Apply protocols for designing with respect for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander designers, Communities and Cultural Knowledges, including Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP)
Apply appropriate protocols and demonstrate safe, ethical and inclusive practices when designing, sharing and discussing design artworks and working respectfully with others
