Rationale
The Visual and Motion Design 7–10 Syllabus provides students with opportunities to understand and explore the nature of visual and motion design as a distinct field of creative practice. Students engage with diverse design forms, reflecting the dynamic and evolving nature of design in historical and contemporary contexts.
The study of Visual and Motion Design 7–10 is founded on specific ways of perceiving and representing the world through the creation and interpretation of visual and motion design artworks. Through Designing and making and Critical and historical studies students develop an understanding of visual and motion design as a globally significant practice and consider its impact on individuals, communities and the environment.
Students develop knowledge, understanding and artistic independence through the interrelated study of Artworld concepts, Viewpoints and Practice. They reflect on their own design practice and that of others, building skills in communicating meaning and representing ideas about functionality, aesthetics and purpose. They learn to interpret multisensory languages and develop the confidence to generate original design solutions that challenge conventions and contribute creatively to visual and motion design. They interpret user experiences and needs, and apply conceptual knowledge with increasing autonomy.
The syllabus fosters appreciation for the personal, collaborative, social, cultural and historical contexts that inform and shape design practices. Students develop insight into the real-world practices of visual and motion design practitioners and connect their own experiences with the broader design world. This awareness helps students recognise their role in creating unique, ethically responsible, sustainable and inclusive design artworks that contribute to contemporary culture.
Students also engage with the rich and distinctive cultural expressions and customs of varied communities throughout history, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. This supports cross-cultural understanding by encouraging a more nuanced appreciation of diversity and providing insights about shared human experiences and the world.
The syllabus supports students in developing the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to navigate and actively participate in contemporary society. This fosters their personal development, enhances problem-solving, critical and creative skills, and prepares students to be innovative thinkers for a variety of future learning opportunities and career paths.
