7–10Communication Technology 7–10 Syllabus (2025)
The new Communication Technology 7–10 Syllabus (2025) is to be implemented from 2028 and will replace the Graphics Technology 7–10 Syllabus (2019).
2026 and 2027 – Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2028 – Start teaching the new syllabus
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts. Schools may choose to implement the new syllabus during the planning and preparation phase.
Content
Stage 5
Teachers select options from:
- Graphics: Graphic design and communication
- Graphics: Graphic modelling and prototyping
- Graphics: Graphics specialisation.
This focus area provides students with the opportunity to develop graphic projects to investigate and report their own ideas or skills in a specialised field of graphics. A graphics specialisation is an opportunity for schools to draw from a range of graphic fields to broaden student understanding or prepare students for further study of the application of graphics. In addition to the content outlined, the knowledge and skills applied during a project may be drawn from the learning experienced in other focus areas.
Specialised fields of graphics could include:
- built environment (for example, architecture, landscape design, urban design)
- computer animation
- education or training
- engineering
- entertainment (for example, game design, movie promotion)
- information or promotion (for example, packaging, web design, advertising)
- product or industrial design
- transport design
- other school-developed option.
Investigate the role and influence of specialised fields of graphics
Investigate real-world applications of specialist graphics
Plan a specialised graphics project based on identified needs or opportunities
Develop a design brief outlining the scope, intention and purpose of the project
Research target audience expectations and technological constraints
Investigate the significance and representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural works in graphics
Develop specifications detailing intended graphic solutions
Generate, record and present ideas
Apply ethical, sustainable and culturally respectful practices in the development of specialised graphics solutions
Investigate tools, technologies and emerging trends in specialised graphics, and apply as relevant to own project
Select presentation methods and formats appropriate to the audience, purpose and medium
Develop prototypes and design iterations to refine ideas
Safely use modelling, prototyping, printing and finishing techniques appropriate to the design brief and medium
Operate digital tools in the production of graphics solutions
Prepare graphics for production and presentation across various media, such as print, web or for 3D fabrication
Collaborate in the production process, adhering to quality standards and safe work practices
Evaluate finished products against the design brief, specifications and user feedback
Create an oral, visual, written or multimodal text to communicate information and ideas about the project
