Communication Technology – Multimedia principles and project management (core)

This focus area outlines communication technology concepts relevant to all other focus areas. They are to be integrated with the content of the selected course undertaken (Graphics or Multimedia).

The knowledge, understanding and skills outlined are integral to the development of multimedia projects.

Manual drawing and sketching may include the use of digital software or assistive technology, including eye gaze technology.

Principles and practices
  • Describe ethical considerations in multimedia contexts, including honesty, respect, misleading practices and plagiarism

  • Investigate data security and privacy practices in multimedia production

  • Outline the importance of social and cultural sensitivity in content creation

  • Investigate intellectual property in multimedia industries, including patents, copyright, trademarks and registered designs

  • Apply protocols, including those related to Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP), when engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and Practices in multimedia works

  • Investigate the ethical responsibilities of using generative artificial intelligence (AI) in multimedia works, including representing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ Cultural Expressions

  • Understand and apply relevant work health and safety (WHS) practices when working with digital and physical production tools

  • Investigate sustainability practices in multimedia contexts, including materials selection, energy usage and hardware disposal or recycling

  • Describe environmental impacts of physical and digital media used in multimedia industries and apply strategies to support waste reduction and energy efficiency

  • Investigate standards, regulations and quality principles in multimedia industries

  • Create written texts to explain principles and practices of communication technologies in multimedia contexts

Skills and processes
  • Identify and select equipment and resources for use in multimedia projects

  • Select and apply hardware, software and storage solutions to optimise production and presentation in multimedia projects

  • Use appropriate file types when collecting, creating and exporting digital media

  • Apply file management protocols, including naming conventions and version control

  • Select and use a range of data storage technologies for digital content, such as physical hardware including USB flash drives and hard drives, servers and cloud storage

  • Select and use appropriate specialist hardware to capture raw digital assets, such as images, recordings or video

  • Use and justify appropriate specialised software when producing and presenting multimedia projects

  • Investigate assistive technology to enhance participation in the development of communication technologies in multimedia projects, including artificial intelligence (AI) tools

  • Develop and apply safe and ethical data management practices when collecting and storing data

Developing projects
  • Identify and use current and emerging technologies in the production of multimedia projects

  • Use design principles and processes to develop, produce and evaluate multimedia projects

  • Apply project management strategies when developing multimedia projects

  • Use Gantt charts or digital planning tools to develop project timelines

  • Identify and manage risks associated with multimedia projects

  • Manage resources effectively to ensure efficient production of multimedia projects

  • Allocate tasks and responsibilities to support collaborative design or production activities

  • Create written texts to document, reflect on and evaluate processes of communication technology design

  • Use subject-specific terminology to describe concepts of communication technology

Documenting
  • Use folios to document the design process and development of multimedia solutions

  • Present annotated design sketches, proposals and concept development records using a variety of physical and digital media

  • Apply and record ongoing evaluation, reflecting on project progress and feedback integration

  • Evaluate multimedia solutions using established criteria, including outlining possible improvements

  • Investigate and apply work and enterprise skills required in multimedia industries

  • Describe new and emerging technologies and their influence on multimedia industries

  • Explore training, employment and career opportunities across multimedia industries
