Stage 2

Interacting

Interacting in a language is primarily done through oral language. Where students use other forms of communication to supplement or replace speech, the content should be taught using the student’s preferred communication form(s).

Exchanging meaning in oral interactions in the target language
  • Share information about themselves to describe their personal world

  • Ask and answer modelled questions in a guided conversation

  • Express emotions and preferences

  • Interact in conversation with teacher and peers in familiar social contexts

Applying knowledge of language systems to interact in the target language
  • Recognise and use modelled sounds, including pronunciation and intonation patterns and/or rhythms to interact

  • Select familiar vocabulary and formulaic phrases to interact

  • Use modelled sentence structures to interact

Applying knowledge of the target language culture(s) to interact
  • Use modelled language structures and nonverbal communication that are appropriate to cultural practices
