Life Skills

Life Skills for Stage 4/5

Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.

Interacting

Interacting in a language is primarily done through oral language. Where students use other forms of communication to supplement or replace speech, the content should be taught using the student’s preferred communication form(s).

Exchanging and negotiating meaning to interact in the target language
  • Respond to interactions using modelled language or expressions

  • Use modelled language to communicate information about themselves

  • Accept, reject or make requests in familiar interactions

  • Communicate preferences in regular classroom routines

  • Use modelled language to ask questions in social or learning interactions

  • Express emotions

  • Use strategies to support communication between participants, such as turn-taking, active listening behaviours and asking for clarification

Applying knowledge of language systems to interact in the target language
  • Recognise modelled sounds, including intonation and pronunciation in spoken interactions

  • Explore features of the sound system, such as pitch, tone, accent, rhythm or intonation

  • Select and use familiar vocabulary to interact

Applying knowledge of the target language culture(s) to interact
  • Recognise facial expressions, gestures or vocabulary that reflect cultural practices

  • Identify how language use reflects different relationships

  • Use modelled language and gestures appropriate to cultural practices to interact
