Life Skills

Life Skills for Stage 4/5

Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.

Communicating

The Communicating outcome can be taught on its own or integrated with other focus areas.

Speaking, listening and interacting

For students who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing, this will be through signing as well as or instead of speaking. For students who use other forms of communication to supplement or replace speech, content should be taught through speaking (and listening) experiences, where appropriate, in combination with the student’s preferred communication form.

  • Respond to familiar or unfamiliar people, auditory signals and cues in their environment

  • Recognise nonverbal indicators associated with communication

  • Respond to environmental cues and language with increased self-regulation

  • Follow single or multistep instructions

  • Express or communicate basic needs, wants, preferences or choices

  • Communicate in response to other people initiating a dialogue

  • Engage in simple interactions, discussions or responses to questions

  • Initiate an interaction in familiar and unfamiliar contexts

  • Recognise different forms of communication

  • Communicate emotions and feelings in contextually appropriate ways

  • Develop social routines and skills in everyday contexts

  • Participate appropriately in a range of settings

  • Transfer information and communicate across a range of contexts

  • Recognise when English, or a home language or dialect is being used
