The new Photography, Film and Digital Media 7–10 Syllabus (2025) is to be implemented from 2028 and will replace the Photographic and Digital Media 7–10 Syllabus (2004).
2026 and 2027 – Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2028 – Start teaching the new syllabus
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts. Schools may choose to implement the new syllabus during the planning and preparation phase.

selects and applies aspects of Photomedia practice to represent points of view in a body of work
Content in Photomedia practice includes reference to photomedia forms. Teachers select relevant still image, moving image or emerging forms.

Document photomedia workflow, including research, concept development, production timelines and refinement in the Photomedia diary
Investigate, invent, adapt and apply a range of strategies when selecting appropriate photomedia forms and procedures to represent different viewpoints and refine a body of work
Investigate current, historical and alternative processes and techniques when creating photographs and film
Investigate ways to construct representations of people, places and concepts that reflect photomedia concepts and viewpoints using relevant media technologies
Experiment with various methods of visual storytelling, using composition, framing, lighting and sequencing to build a narrative
Explore and experiment with photomedia software applications and related techniques
Develop, refine and demonstrate technical accomplishment in a body of work individually or collaboratively
Select still image, moving image and emerging forms to represent ideas and meaning in a body of work
Demonstrate curatorial judgement to customise, select, arrange and present still image, moving image or emerging forms in a body of work to audiences
Create written texts to reflect on and justify intentions, choices and actions in own photomedia practice
Use subject-specific language to communicate and represent ideas about own making practice informed by the Artworld concepts and Viewpoints
Apply protocols for photomedia making with respect for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander photomedia artists, Communities and Cultural Knowledges, including Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP)
Apply appropriate protocols and demonstrate safe, ethical and inclusive environments and practices when making, sharing and discussing photomedia artworks and working respectfully with others
