Rationale
The Photography, Film and Digital Media 7–10 Syllabus provides students with opportunities to understand and investigate photography, film and digital media as distinct fields of photomedia practice. Students engage with diverse photomedia forms, reflecting the dynamic and evolving nature of these fields through historical and contemporary contexts.
The study of Photography, Film and Digital Media 7–10 is based on specific ways of perceiving and representing the world through the creation and interpretation of photomedia artworks. Through Making and Critical and historical studies, students develop an understanding of photography, film making and digital media and an appreciation of these globally significant practices which are shaped by their histories, applications, industries and cultural relevance.
Students develop knowledge, understanding and artistic independence through the interrelated study of Artworld concepts, Viewpoints and Practice. They reflect on their own photomedia practice and that of others, building skills in representation, interpretation of multisensory languages, critical and creative thinking, media literacy and technical proficiency, and apply conceptual knowledge with increasing autonomy.
The syllabus fosters appreciation for the personal, collaborative, social, cultural, commercial, technological and historical contexts that inform and shape photomedia practices. Students develop insight into real-world photomedia practice and connect their own experiences with the broader media landscape.
Students also engage with the rich and distinctive cultural expressions and customs of varied communities throughout history, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. This supports cross-cultural understanding by encouraging a more nuanced appreciation of diversity and providing insights about shared human experiences and the world.
The syllabus supports students in developing the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to navigate and actively participate in contemporary society as informed creators and consumers of photomedia content. Students build ethical awareness of cultural representation and appropriation. This awareness helps students recognise their role in creating unique and ethically responsible content that contributes to contemporary culture and prepares them for future learning and career pathways.
