The new Photography, Film and Digital Media 7–10 Syllabus (2025) is to be implemented from 2028 and will replace the Photographic and Digital Media 7–10 Syllabus (2004).
2026 and 2027 – Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2028 – Start teaching the new syllabus
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts. Schools may choose to implement the new syllabus during the planning and preparation phase.

investigates and interprets aspects of photomedia practice to represent critical and historical perspectives
Investigate the history of, and advancements in, technology and photomedia practice and how they have contributed to the evolution of the camera, photograph and film
Research and explain the value and significance of photomedia practices, conventions and procedures that are informed by different times, places and contexts using different viewpoints
Explain how the photomedia artist’s intention, choice of materials and technical decisions shape the meaning and impact of a photomedia artwork
Investigate how editing, manipulation and digital enhancements represent or misrepresent reality and authenticity in photomedia artworks
Examine how photomedia artists use storytelling techniques, such as narrative structures, sequencing and multisensory codes, to convey meaning and engage the audience
Examine critical and historical accounts to understand how different viewpoints are used to interpret the significance of photomedia artworks
Investigate and apply the ways critics and historians construct and represent arguments about photomedia artists and their photomedia artworks
Create written texts about a variety of photomedia artworks to represent intentions, choices and actions, using critical and historical perspectives
Use subject-specific language to communicate and represent the meaning and significance of photomedia artworks using Artworld concepts and Viewpoints
Recognise and explain ways Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander visual Storytelling preserves Culture and shares Knowledges across generations
Investigate the ethical implications of artificial intelligence (AI), Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP), copyright and digital safety in photomedia practices, including authorship, originality and synthetics
Investigate how curators and production companies create accessible and inclusive experiences by intentionally displaying and screening photomedia artworks to engage audiences
