The new Photography, Film and Digital Media 7–10 Syllabus (2025) is to be implemented from 2028 and will replace the Photographic and Digital Media 7–10 Syllabus (2004).
2026 and 2027 – Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2028 – Start teaching the new syllabus
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts. Schools may choose to implement the new syllabus during the planning and preparation phase.
Content
Life Skills
Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.
The materials, equipment, processes outlined in the photomedia forms are not a list of essential content.
Teachers select materials equipment and processes relevant to the photomedia form being taught. Students with disability may require adjustments to access and engage with photomedia forms.
Everyday uses of still images
Photographic equipment, such as cameras or devices
Capturing an image using camera or other devices
Camera settings, such as focus, flash, aperture or shutter speed
Lighting techniques using natural, artificial or portable light sources
Image stabilisation tools, such as fixed mounts or tripods
Photographic genres, such as documentary, portraiture or landscape photography
Compositional techniques, such as rule of thirds, scale or the use of camera angles
Digital media software to experiment with use of text, graphic design or image manipulation
Current and emerging technologies, analogue or alternative photography practices, such as time lapse, 360° photography, long exposure, darkroom, montage, photograms or solar cyanotypes
Post-production editing techniques, such as cropping, retouching, colour correction, layering or other digital manipulation
Image file formats to use for quality, resolution, editing, accessibility or storage
Photographic displays, such as prints, digital projections or curated series for exhibition
Everyday uses of moving images
Film production equipment, such as cameras or other filming devices, microphones, lighting or tripods
Capturing moving images using film equipment
Camera settings, such as exposure settings, frame rates, focus or colour adjustments
Camera movements, angles or shot types
Storyboarding strategies to develop a concept
Compositional techniques, such as balance, perspective, scale or spatial arrangement
Mise en scène elements, such as backdrops, lighting or props
Sequencing techniques using digital software, such as montage or juxtaposition
2D animation techniques, such as stop-motion, title sequencing, digital layering or sound design
Current and emerging technologies to create special or visual effects, such as time lapse, green screen, on-set lighting or digital effects
Post-production editing techniques, such as masking, layering or sound design
Video and audio file formats to use for resolution, editing flexibility, storage, accessibility or playback quality
Screenings and displays of photomedia artworks that highlight narrative themes, stylistic choices or audience engagement

Equipment used to create hybrid, interactive or multisensory forms, such as projectors, augmented reality (AR) applications, virtual reality (VR) tools, motion sensors, controllers, microphones, speakers or software tools
