Stage 5

Metal industry: related materials, resources, tools, equipment and techniques

The following points guide teachers to select safe, accessible and appropriate materials, resources, tools and equipment relevant to the industry and project, and the stage of learning.

Schools must follow education sector or school-based policies and guidelines regarding age restrictions and supervision requirements for specific equipment.

All equipment marked with an asterisk (*) may have additional size and age restrictions and a local risk assessment may be required.

Students with disability may require adjustments.

Materials and resources: Components
  • Drawer runners, handles, hinges, knobs, knockdown fittings, latches, springs, washers

Measuring and marking-out tools
  • Callipers, centre punches, chalk, combination sets, dividers, dye, engineer's square, feeler gauge, jenny calliper, markers, metal rule, micrometer, radius gauge, scribers, squares, surface plates, tape measure, thread pitch gauge, V-block, vernier calliper

Hand tools
  • Cutting: aviation snips, cold chisel, files, hacksaw, tinsnips

  • Shaping or embellishing: bossing mallets, cold chisel, files, folding bars, punches, stakes, tinman’s mallet

Power tools
  • Cutting: nibblers, angle grinder*

  • Shaping or embellishing: die grinder, sander or polisher, angle grinder*

Machine tools
  • Cutting: bench shears, cold saw, computer numerical control (CNC) machines, drill press, water jet cutter, guillotine*, metal lathe*, oxyacetylene torch*, bench grinder*, horizontal metal working bandsaw*, vertical metal working bandsaw*

  • Shaping or embellishing: laser cutter, linisher, magnetic folder, metal lathe, milling machine, pan brake, shaper, surface grinder

Clamping tools
  • Custom jigs or fixtures, F-clamp, G-clamp, machine screws, mitre clamp, nuts and bolts, quick release clamp, vice grips

Assembly or joinery tools
  • Die sets, rivet gun, spot, tinman’s stakes, welders, electric arc*, gas metal arc welding (GMAW)*, oxyacetylene kit*

Joining techniques
  • Sheet metal: folds and seams, pop riveting, soft soldering, brazing*, welding (electric arc, gas, GMAW)*

  • Machining: interference fit, thread cutting, working to tolerances

  • Fabrication: soldering, solid riveting, brazing*, welding (electric arc, gas, GMAW)*

Shaping and forming techniques
  • Bending, computer-aided design (CAD)/computer-aided manufacturing (CAM)/CNC processes, cutting threads, drawing, fabricating, folding, forging*, hot and cold processes, laser cutting, and engraving, rolling, scroll work, twisting, lathe work*, metal spinning*, milling*

Finishing techniques
  • Anodising, blueing, brushing, etching, greasing, hammering, oiling, plastic dipping, plating, powder coating, preparing surface with chemicals or abrasives, recoating, spraying, texturing, wiping
