Stage 5

Building and construction industry: related materials, resources, tools, equipment and techniques

The following points guide teachers to select safe, accessible and appropriate materials, resources, tools and equipment relevant to the industry and project, and the stage of learning.

Schools must follow education sector or school-based policies and guidelines regarding age restrictions and supervision requirements for specific equipment.

All equipment marked with an asterisk (*) may have additional size and age restrictions and a local risk assessment may be required.

Students with disability may require adjustments.

Materials and resources: Components
  • Fittings and fixtures (e.g. windows and doors, masonry fixings, skirting and architraves, fascia), plumbing, precast concrete components, prefabricated components

Measuring and marking-out tools
  • Laser levels, plumb-bob, rafter square, sliding bevel, spirit levels, string or chalk lines, stud finder, tape measure

Hand tools
  • Cutting: aviation snips, bolster chisel, cold chisel, hacksaw, panel saw, utility knives, wood chisel

  • Shaping or embellishing: bull floats, hand floats, edgers, groovers, trowels, screeds

  • Ground work: mattock, pick, post hole pincer, rake, shovel, wheelbarrow

Power tools
  • Cutting: cordless jigsaw, hole saws, tile cutter, angle grinder*, powered jigsaw*

  • Shaping or decorating: cordless drill, power drill, random orbital sander, angle grinder*, belt sander*, laminate trimmer*, router*

Machine tools
  • Cutting: computer numerical control (CNC) routers, portable router*

  • Shaping or embellishing: CNC machines, laser cutter, sliding router table*

Clamping tools
  • Custom jigs or fixtures, F-clamp, G-clamp, quick release clamp, sash clamp

Assembly or joinery tools
  • Caulking gun, hammers, impact drivers, lock mortice jig, nail punch, pocket screw jig, putty knife, screwdrivers, screw guns, tapes, nail guns*

Joining techniques
  • Chemical and mechanical fasteners, joining dissimilar materials, permanent, semi-permanent and temporary methods, riveting, scribed joints, soldering, timber or metal frame joinery

Shaping and forming techniques
  • Bending, carving, computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), CNC processes, filing, formwork, laminating, planing, sanding, turning*, using moulds, routing*

Finishing techniques
  • Brushing, cement render, gap filling, interior and exterior techniques, preparing surface with chemicals or abrasives, recoating, spraying, texturing, waterproofing, wiping
