Materials and resources

  • Investigate sources and conversion of raw materials that could be used in building and construction projects

  • Explain the role of Country in the provision and management of building and construction materials for production

  • Discuss ethical responsibilities when sourcing materials for building and construction projects

  • Investigate sustainable practices in the building and construction industry

  • Investigate the types and uses of a range of materials used for footings, framing, flooring, roofing, cladding and internal linings

Tools and equipment

  • Investigate tools used by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples for building to manipulate natural materials and the environment

  • Identify a range of marking-out, cutting, shaping, forming, detailing, finishing and assembly tools to make components or projects

  • Perform safe set-up of tools and equipment relevant to the project, including inspecting and adjusting guards before use, following standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safety data sheets (SDSs), calculating speed and feed rates for machine processes, securing work pieces, changing blades on portable power tools, ensuring battery and/or cable care, or using dust control measures

  • Maintain hand tools and equipment, including cleaning, lubricating or replacing consumables such as blades, bits and abrasives

  • Create written texts to explain the practical applications and safety requirements of a range of tools and equipment

  • Demonstrate safe workshop and site practices and procedures when using materials, tools and equipment in building and construction projects

  • Select and use personal protective equipment (PPE) when working with tools, materials and machines

  • Prepare and construct formwork for a simple concrete project

  • Apply technical skill to refine and make quality projects

  • Use techniques to ensure the precision and quality of building and construction components and projects

  • Use traditional and advanced manufacturing technologies to create components and detail surfaces for projects

  • Outline the processes to apply appropriate finishes

  • Prepare working environments for the production, finishing and assembly of building and construction products, such as erecting safety fencing, displaying work signage or connecting dust extraction

  • Use hand tools, power tools, machinery, chemicals or abrasives to prepare building and construction surfaces for the application of finishes

  • Apply a range of finishing techniques to enhance or protect completed building and construction projects

  • Use collaborative production processes to make components or complete building and construction projects
