The new Aquatic Technology 7–10 Syllabus (2024) is to be implemented from 2027.
2025 and 2026 – Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2027 – Start teaching the new syllabus
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts.
Content
Stage 5
Teachers select options from:
- Aquatic activities
- Aquatic industries
- Aquatic harvesting
- Aquatic engagement project.
Investigate fishing methods and Practices used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
Identify dangerous local fishing spots and list the conditions that present risks
Identify, describe and record data on the fish species found in the local area
Compare methods, tackle and bait used to target specific species of fish and invertebrates in a range of conditions and environments
Investigate methods used to harvest crustaceans, molluscs and edible aquatic plants
Prepare and maintain fishing equipment and tackle
Investigate the impact of current and emerging technologies on recreational fishing equipment
Design and make equipment for recreational fishing
Assemble rigs to target specific species in a range of conditions and environments
Outline and use methods for storing and preparing bait
Investigate techniques, locations and regulations for collecting baits
Demonstrate skills, techniques and safe practices when engaging in fishing activities
Compare technologies used to locate and target fish and aquatic features in recreational fishing including drones, AI, GPS, sounders and fish finders
Investigate NSW’s recreational fishing rules, regulations and licensing requirements
Outline rules regarding bag and size limits and discuss why these rules have been put in place
Assess the impact of recreational fishing practices on aquatic environments
Investigate the importance of fishing in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities
Compare methods and technologies used to commercially harvest seafood
Describe the differences between and uses of trawl nets, gill nets and seine nets
Explore the roles that fisheries play in local communities
Investigate and outline commercial fishing rules, regulations and licensing
Investigate Australian fish stocks and how these are monitored and maintained using technologies
Assess the impact of commercial fishing practices on the environment and society
