Aquatic food and products (core)
Aquaculture
  • Investigate the Cultural and Customary significance of aquaculture to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples

  • Identify the different types of aquaculture practice and the species involved

  • Investigate the different types of aquaculture and mariculture including methods, technologies and challenges

  • Describe ethical considerations in aquaculture practices

  • Investigate the life cycles of aquaculture species

  • Describe the environmental requirements for aquaculture production

  • Investigate propagation and nutrition technologies and practices in aquaculture to maximise yields

  • Describe strategies and technologies used to prevent and isolate diseases and pests in aquaculture

  • Assess the economic, ethical and sustainability considerations of commercial aquaculture

  • Investigate how emerging technologies in aquaculture impact individuals, society and the environment

Aquariums
  • Compare aquariums to natural ecosystems, including similarities and differences in their nitrogen cycles

  • Use equipment and practical skills to maintain a viable aquarium or aquatic system

  • Explain the relationship between aquarium keeping and aquacultural practices

Seafood and resources
  • Identify the range of aquatic creatures harvested as a food source from aquatic environments

  • Research the global reliance on seafood as a food source

  • Investigate the different types of fishing practices including methods, technologies and equipment

  • Research seafood preparation and consumption in a range of cultures

  • Describe the safe storage and handling of seafood

  • Examine the impact of seafood production on ocean ecosystems
