Options: Aquatic environments and conservation

Teachers select options from:

  • Aquatic biology
  • Aquatic ecology
  • Investigating aquatic ecosystems
  • Local area study.
Aquatic biology (option)
Aquatic animals
  • Investigate the different types of animals present in a range of aquatic environments

  • Investigate and describe the interrelationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and aquatic animals

  • Examine the differences in anatomy and physiology of a range of aquatic vertebrates and invertebrates

  • Describe the physical characteristics and migratory patterns of aquatic animals such as mammals, fish, sharks and birds

  • Investigate the use of technologies to track the movements of aquatic animals

  • Analyse data about the movement of aquatic animals to explain how environmental factors influence migratory patterns

  • Explain the threats facing aquatic animals including species decline, and explain the policies, actions and technologies used to protect them

Aquatic plants
  • Investigate and describe the interrelationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and aquatic plants

  • Classify the main types of aquatic plants

  • Outline the role of aquatic plants as producers in ecosystems

  • Explain the threats facing aquatic plants, and explain the policies, actions and technologies being used to protect them

Plankton
  • Identify and classify the 2 main types of plankton and their characteristics

  • Explain the importance of plankton in aquatic ecosystems

Dangerous aquatic creatures
  • Classify and identify dangerous aquatic creatures and the type(s) of threat they pose

  • Investigate the differences in anatomy and physiology of dangerous aquatic creatures

  • Outline common types of injury caused by different dangerous aquatic creatures and the required first aid procedures and treatments

  • Identify signs of aggression in dangerous aquatic creatures and avoidance techniques when around them
