Options: Aquatic environments and conservation

Teachers select options from:

  • Aquatic biology
  • Aquatic ecology
  • Investigating aquatic ecosystems
  • Local area study.
Aquatic ecology (option)
Aquatic ecosystems
  • Investigate the value of oceans, estuaries, wetlands and freshwater systems to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples

  • Identify a range of aquatic ecosystems

  • Explain how the interrelationship of biotic and abiotic components is essential for the function of ecosystems

  • Describe how organisms in aquatic environments have adapted to survive in various conditions

  • Construct food webs to compare the varieties of animals found in 2 distinct aquatic ecosystems

  • Explain the factors that affect the distribution and abundance of organisms in a range of aquatic ecosystems

  • Investigate the water quality parameters required for the growth, health and sustainability of aquatic ecosystems

Threats and preservation
  • Investigate the human and environmental factors that impact aquatic ecosystems

  • Analyse the impact of introduced species on the biodiversity of aquatic ecosystems

  • Assess the importance and preservation of blue carbon ecosystems including mangroves and seagrass beds

Technology
  • Demonstrate how remote sensing technologies are used to gather data about aquatic ecosystems

  • Conduct an investigation to measure and monitor water quality in an aquatic ecosystem

  • Investigate how technology is used to conserve and manage aquatic ecosystems
