7–10Child Studies 7–10 Syllabus
The new Child Studies 7–10 Syllabus (2025) is to be implemented from 2028 and will replace the Child Studies 7–10 Syllabus (2019).
2026 and 2027 – Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2028 – Start teaching new syllabus
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts. Schools may choose to implement the new syllabus during the planning and preparation phase.
Content
Stage 5
Teachers select options from:
- Birth to 5 years
- Early childhood education and care
- The mental health and wellbeing of children
- Children globally
- School-developed option.
Define mental health and wellbeing for children
Explain how mental health exists on a wellbeing continuum
Describe the positive mental health and wellbeing of children
Discuss the importance of positive mental health for the development of children and opportunities to support it
Outline strategies and government policies that promote, protect and provide early intervention for the positive mental health and wellbeing of children
Describe the benefits of government working with communities and other organisations to support the mental health and wellbeing of children
Describe the role children can play in supporting other children’s mental health and wellbeing, and the skills and strategies that can support them in this role
Research children’s mental health services and support networks and explain how they can promote, protect and provide early intervention for children’s mental health and wellbeing
Identify services, campaigns and strategies that promote Cultural, social and emotional wellbeing for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children
Describe how family, community and educational institutions can contribute to destigmatising mental ill-health for children
Analyse how families and communities can enhance children’s mental health and wellbeing throughout life’s changes and challenges
Analyse how different factors, including sleep, physical health, relationships and nutrition can support the positive mental health and wellbeing of children
Explain the importance of normalising help-seeking for children in relation to their mental health and wellbeing
Describe how mental health services can be used for prevention, intervention and for the maintenance of mental health
Consider how mental health services support children and families
Describe the skills children need to support their own mental health, wellbeing and resilience
Evaluate strategies to develop children’s social and emotional skills, including evidence-based social and emotional learning programs in schools
Describe ways Cultural healing supports Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children, families and Communities
Evaluate the impact of media on the mental health and wellbeing of children
