7–10Child Studies 7–10 Syllabus
The new Child Studies 7–10 Syllabus (2025) is to be implemented from 2028 and will replace the Child Studies 7–10 Syllabus (2019).
2026 and 2027 – Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2028 – Start teaching new syllabus
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts. Schools may choose to implement the new syllabus during the planning and preparation phase.
Content
Stage 5
Teachers select options from:
- Birth to 5 years
- Early childhood education and care
- The mental health and wellbeing of children
- Children globally
- School-developed option.
Explain reasons why families may require early childhood education and care services
Outline types of formal early childhood education and care services
Explain why families may choose informal childcare options
Evaluate information and services available for families when selecting early childhood education and care services
Describe subsidies and support for families in accessing early childhood education and care services
Analyse changes made to support child growth, development and care in the early childhood education and care sector over time
Explain ways early childhood education and care services meet the learning, health and safety needs of children, including those from diverse backgrounds
Describe ways early childhood education and care services provide opportunities for children to develop social and emotional skills
Analyse strategies used by early childhood education and care services to acknowledge cultural beliefs and practices
Analyse the role of allied health services in supporting children with diverse needs in early childhood education and care services
Examine the legislation and regulations that early childhood education services are required to follow
Analyse how early childhood education and care services provide opportunities to implement Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Knowledges
Examine cultural activities and experiences for children in early childhood education and care services
Assess ways families, schools and early childhood education and care services support children’s transition to school
Identify opportunities for working with children
Discuss skills and attributes required to work effectively with children
Describe training or educational opportunities related to a career in early childhood education and care
Explain the importance of culturally responsive training for early childhood education and care staff in meeting the needs of children from diverse backgrounds
