The new Music 7–10 Syllabus (2024) is to be implemented from 2026.

2026 – Start teaching new syllabus
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts.
Content
Life Skills
- MULS-LIS-01
responds to music from a variety of styles, cultures or contexts
- MULS-LIS-02
responds to the ways the elements of music are used
Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.
For students who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing, Listening may include the use of assistive technology, score-reading activities, watching performances and accessing music through other senses including the use of sign language.
Respond to recorded or live music
Classify instruments according to mechanics of sound production
Identify an instrument or the instrumental family to which it belongs in response to a musical stimulus
Respond to the connection between notations or technology and music
Listen and respond to live performances using appropriate communication and behaviours
Share experiences of music or musical events with others
Access music for personal wellbeing and enjoyment
Reflect on choices and feedback in critical listening activities
Explore expressive qualities in a piece of music
Communicate the ideas expressed in a piece of music using verbal, written or multimodal texts
Respond to music from a time period, culture, genre or style
Engage with music that reflects personal and/or collective identity and preference
Communicate the ways in which music reflects cultural contexts
Engage with music from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultures
Respond to Australian music across a range of historical and cultural contexts
Recognise music that has been adapted from an original source
Respond to the elements of music
Respond to changes in the use of the elements
Describe the effect of the elements in a recorded or live piece of music
