Life Skills

Life Skills for Stage 4/5

Through collaborative curriculum planning, it may be decided that Life Skills outcomes and content are the most appropriate option for some students with intellectual disability.

Elements of music

Teachers should select appropriate elements of music relevant to the repertoire and the interests and needs of the students.

Duration
  • Long and short sounds

  • Steady and changing beat

  • Note values

  • Rhythms

  • Metres

  • Rhythmic devices such as ostinato, backbeat

Pitch
  • Higher and lower

  • Melody such as direction and contour

  • Tonality such as major and minor

  • Harmony such as consonant and dissonant

Texture
  • Density such as thick or thin

  • Layers of sound

Performing media and timbre
  • Performing media/sound sources such as voices, instruments, electronic, natural

  • Sound production methods such as blowing, plucking, scraping, strumming, shaking

  • Timbral descriptions such as nasal, metallic

Dynamics and expression
  • Loud (forte) or soft (piano)

  • Becoming louder (crescendo) or softer (diminuendo)

Structure
  • Macrostructures such as verse–chorus

  • Microstructures such as riffs or motifs
