The new Physical Activity and Sports Science 7–10 Syllabus (2025) is to be implemented from 2028 and will replace the Physical Activity and Sports Studies 7–10 Syllabus (2019).
2026 and 2027 – Plan and prepare to teach the new syllabus
2028 – Start teaching the new syllabus
School sectors are responsible for implementing syllabuses and are best placed to provide schools with specific guidance and information on implementation given their understanding of their individual contexts. Schools may choose to implement the new syllabus during the planning and preparation phase.
Content
Stage 5
Teachers select options from:
- Leisure and recreation
- Science of movement
- Sports management
- School-developed option.
Assess factors that increase risk in physical activity and sporting contexts and propose strategies to reduce these risks
Describe the features of a risk assessment and explain how it can be used to determine the likelihood and potential severity of risks
Evaluate the effectiveness of a variety of risk assessments in terms of identifying and minimising risk
Investigate organisations and resources that can provide advice and support when planning for safe participation in physical activity and sport
Justify the importance of protective equipment, modifications, rules, guidelines and policies for enhancing safety in physical activity and sport
Research and use data to analyse the likelihood of injuries resulting from physical activity and in sporting contexts
Describe the role of a sports trainer with reference to player safety, injury assessment and injury management
Discuss the role and responsibilities of a coach
Explain the various qualities and skills required to be an effective coach, including ethics, organisation, interpersonal skills, conflict management and ability to motivate others
Assess the effectiveness of different coaching styles in meeting the diverse needs of athletes, teams and a variety of sports
Assess the influence coaches have on personal attitudes, safety, participation and performance
Develop and implement basic coaching skills by instructing individuals or small groups in a physical activity or sports context
Design and conduct a coaching session for a selected physical activity or sport
Investigate formal coaching opportunities and qualifications
Assess an officiating code of conduct for a selected sport and how it supports and guides the officials, coaches, athletes and spectators
Discuss the roles and responsibilities of officials in sport
Explain the various qualities and skills required to be an effective official
Assess the influence officials have on personal attitudes, participation and performance
Develop and implement basic refereeing or umpiring skills in sport
Investigate formal officiating opportunities and qualifications
Assess an officiating code of conduct for a selected sport and how it supports and guides the officials, coaches, athletes and spectators
Outline the roles and responsibilities in event management and determine the skills required to successfully implement them
Investigate the suitability of different types of event structures and formats for specific physical activity and sporting events
Design a schedule and draw for an event, including modifications that could be made to promote participation and enjoyment
Explain the factors that make a sporting event a success
Identify and prioritise the tasks required to successfully manage a physical activity or sporting event, including the actions before, during and after the event
Prepare a budget for a physical activity or sporting event
Plan and implement a physical activity or sporting event that addresses key components of organisation, allocation of specific roles and responsibilities, planning a schedule and draw, and use of technology
